In a significant move to improve healthcare access, the Jigawa State Government, under the leadership of Governor Mallam Umar A. Namadi, has introduced a landmark free medical scheme targeting Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs).
The comprehensive intervention focuses on three critical conditions: diabetes, hypertension, and sickle cell disease. Under the new policy, eligible beneficiaries are entitled to cost-free treatment as both outpatients and inpatients.
The benefit package is robust, covering laboratory investigations, radiological services such as X-rays and ultrasounds, essential medications, and physiotherapy.
To ensure the program reaches residents across the state, the government has designated twelve key healthcare facilities to commence services immediately.
The initiative is currently operational at the General Hospitals in Dutse, Hadejia, Gumel, Kazaure, Ringim, Birnin Kudu, Jahun, Babura, Kafin Hausa, and Birniwa. Additionally, the Cottage Hospitals in Bulangu and Gwaram have been accredited to provide these free services.
In a bid to sustain the initiative, the state government has issued strict guidelines to Special Advisers, health sector assistants, and hospital management teams.
They have been directed to ensure seamless quality service delivery while implementing rigorous checks to safeguard the program against abuse by non-beneficiaries.
