The Jigawa State Government has awarded a N1.2 billion contract for the installation of solar-powered streetlights in a bid to enhance security and improve infrastructure in selected areas of the state capital, Dutse, and other local government areas.

The contract was approved through the Ministry of Renewable Energy, with the aim to provide sustainable and cost-effective lighting in areas that have experienced poor illumination, particularly in Unguwar Gindin Dinya in Dutse and parts of Hadejia city.

Speaking during the opening of the tender for the project, the state Commissioner for Power, Hon. Engr. Surajo Musa, emphasized that the solar streetlight project is not just about beautification but also a vital component in boosting security.

“The provision of solar-powered streetlights is in line with Governor Malam Umar Namadi’s 12-point agenda, which prioritizes the safety and well-being of Jigawa citizens,” he said.

Musa explained that the project would illuminate key areas, particularly in locations where security concerns have been raised due to insufficient lighting. The installation of the streetlights, he added, would help improve safety for residents, deter criminal activities, and create a more secure environment for both day and night activities.

He further stated that the project aligns with the government’s broader vision to utilize renewable energy solutions for sustainable development and security in the state.

The N1.2 billion contract, which will cover the supply and installation of the streetlights, is expected to be a significant step towards improving infrastructure, enhancing safety, and contributing to the overall development goals of the state.
