A report from the United Nations says Iran has carried out at least 40 executions since the beginning of the year on what it describes as national security grounds.

According to the UN human rights chief, Volker Türk, 18 of those executed were linked to recent protests in the country.

He said the authorities have increased arrests and tightened restrictions on public expression, with thousands of people detained as part of a wider crackdown on dissent.

The United Nations warned that the situation reflects growing pressure on civic freedoms and urged a review of how the death penalty is being used in such cases.

It added that the rising number of executions has raised concern among international observers who are calling for greater transparency in legal proceedings and stronger protections for basic rights. The UN also expressed worry that continued repression could deepen tensions within the country as authorities face criticism over their handling of dissent and public protests in recent years.

It called for renewed efforts to ensure accountability and protect fundamental freedoms across all institutions worldwide concern growing.
