The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has recognised Prof. Sadiq Gombe as the National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), replacing the expelled former chairman, Shehu Gabam.
The development follows the implementation of a Supreme Court judgment, which the party said affirmed its authority to determine its leadership and manage its internal affairs in line with its constitution.
The SDP National Publicity Secretary, Rufus Aiyenigba, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja.
According to Rufus, INEC updated its records by removing the names of Gabam and other expelled members from its database on June 17.
He noted that the electoral commission acted in compliance with the Supreme Court ruling, which recognised the party’s autonomy in selecting its leaders and disciplining members.
“INEC on Wednesday bowed to the autonomy of the Social Democratic Party by implementing the ruling of the Supreme Court by uploading the name of Prof. Sadiq Gombe to replace the expelled former national chairman, Shehu Gabam,” the statement read in part.
The SDP hailed the move as a major step toward resolving the leadership crisis that has affected the party in recent months.
Recall that the crisis stemmed from disagreements between rival factions over control of the party’s national structure.
The Party’s Publicity Secretary further commended INEC for respecting the rule of law and judicial pronouncements.
He said the commission’s decision had been welcomed by many members and supporters of the party across the country.
He further stated that the action was consistent with the position of the Supreme Court that neither the courts nor INEC should interfere in the internal affairs of political parties.
The party expressed hope that the latest development would strengthen cooperation between INEC and political parties while promoting democratic principles.
The SDP also said it had now overcome its leadership challenges and was focused on building a stable platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.
