Independence anniversary: CAN urges Nigerians not to surrender to despair

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Northern region, has congratulated Nigerians on the nation’s 65th Independence Anniversary, simultaneously urging citizens to keep faith and remain hopeful that the country will overcome its current challenges.

In a press statement issued on Wednesday, the Northern CAN Chairman, Rev. Joseph John Hayab, described the anniversary as a moment for sober reflection and renewed commitment.

He stressed that Nigeria, despite its trials, remains a blessed nation with abundant human and natural resources capable of driving it to greatness.

Rev. Hayab emphasized that citizens must not give up on their country.

He stated that, "Nigeria is our country, and we must continue to believe in it. We must not surrender our hope to despair. Our responsibility as citizens is to contribute positively to nation-building, while our leaders must double their efforts to provide the right leadership that will inspire confidence and restore the dignity of being Nigerian."

The CAN leader urged political, religious, and community figures to use the anniversary to re-dedicate themselves to addressing core national challenges, including insecurity, crippling poverty, and high unemployment.

He argued that Nigerians can only feel a true sense of belonging when leaders work selflessly to guarantee justice, equity, and fairness across the federation.

Rev. Hayab stressed that Nigeria’s vast diversity should be harnessed as a strength rather than be allowed to be a source of division. He called on both leaders and citizens to rise above selfish interests and work solely for the common good.

"Nigeria has what it takes to be a beacon of hope in Africa and beyond. What is needed is sincerity, vision, and action that put the welfare of the people first,” he asserted.

The Northern CAN also reaffirmed its commitment to continue engaging constructively with stakeholders across all divides to ensure that peace, unity, and progress remain the foundational pillars of the Nigerian project.
