How to secure social media accounts on your phone

In today’s digital age, social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, and WhatsApp are more than just communication tools, they are part of our personal and professional lives. But with hackers, scammers, and identity thieves lurking online, keeping your accounts safe is not a choice, it’s a necessity.
If your phone is your primary gateway to these platforms, here are practical steps to secure your social media accounts and protect your digital identity.
Use Strong and Unique Passwords
The first line of defence is your password. Avoid simple combinations like “123456” or “password.” Instead, create strong, unique passwords that combine uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Never reuse the same password across multiple accounts. Using a password manager app can help you remember them without the stress.
Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
Most social media platforms offer two-factor authentication. This adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second code, usually sent via SMS, email, or an authenticator app, whenever you log in. Even if someone gets your password, they won’t easily access your account without this second step.you're
Keep Your Phone Locked
Your phone itself is the gateway to all your social media accounts. Always use a PIN, fingerprint, or face recognition to lock your device. This prevents strangers from snooping into your apps if your phone gets lost or stolen.
Beware of Phishing Links
Hackers often trick users with fake links sent via messages, DMs, or emails. Before clicking on any link, confirm the source. Social media companies will never ask for your password through a random link. When in doubt, ignore and delete suspicious messages.
Regularly Log Out of Shared Devices
If you log in to your accounts on another person’s phone or a public computer, don’t forget to log out when you’re done. You can also check your active sessions under account settings and end any suspicious logins.
Update Apps and Operating System
Outdated apps or phone software can create loopholes for hackers. Regularly update your phone’s operating system and your social media apps to patch security weaknesses. Enable automatic updates if possible.
Limit Third-Party App Access
Some games, quizzes, or websites ask you to log in with your social media accounts. While convenient, granting access to unknown apps can expose your data. Review and remove third-party apps you no longer use from your account settings.
Monitor Account Activity
Social media platforms allow you to track login history and device activity. Check this regularly. If you notice a login from a location you’ve never been to, change your password immediately.
