Frederick Agbedi, who represents Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency of Bayelsa State, has been appointed as the new Minority Leader of the House of Representatives.
His emergence followed the resignation of the former Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda of Rivers State, who left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). His defection created a vacancy in the opposition leadership in the House.
The minority caucus confirmed Agbedi’s appointment in a letter sent to Speaker Tajudeen Abbas during Thursday’s plenary session.
While reading the letter, the Speaker said the opposition lawmakers had agreed by consensus on new principal officers to fill the vacant positions.
According to the nomination, Hon. Frederick Agbedi was chosen as Minority Leader. Hon. Mansur Soro of the Allied Peoples Movement was named Minority Whip, while Hon. Abdussamad Dasuki of the African Democratic Congress became the Deputy Minority Leader.
With the announcement, Abbas said the leadership structure of the minority caucus was now complete and congratulated the newly appointed lawmakers.
Agbedi, a long-serving lawmaker who has been in the House since 2011, will now lead opposition members in coordinating their activities and presenting their positions on national issues.
His role will also involve ensuring unity among minority parties and strengthening their voice during debates and lawmaking in the House.
The changes come at a time of growing political realignments in the House, following recent defections and adjustments in leadership positions.
After the announcement, Speaker Abbas assured the new minority leaders of the House’s cooperation in carrying out their duties.
Political observers say the new leadership will focus on building unity within the opposition and providing strong checks on government policies in the 10th Assembly.
