House of Reps advances Gbenga Daniel’s Ijebu State bill after second reading

The House of Representatives on Thursday advanced the bill seeking the creation of Ijebu State out of the present Ogun State, marking a significant milestone in one of Nigeria’s oldest and most persistent state-creation movements.
The proposed legislation, championed by Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel (Ogun East), passed second reading after receiving broad bipartisan support from lawmakers who described it as a bold step towards equity, balanced federalism, and cultural preservation.
The bill aims to revive the legacy of the old Ijebu Province, renowned for its rich cultural heritage, commercial vibrancy, and historic relevance to Nigeria’s pre- and post-independence development.
During plenary, several members commended Senator Daniel for his unwavering commitment to the cause, calling the initiative “long overdue” and “a just reward for a region that has contributed immensely to national progress.”
Reliable sources confirmed that an Ijebu-Remo Harmonisation Committee had earlier been constituted to resolve key issues, including the proposed name and capital of the new state — a move political observers say demonstrates the unity and maturity of purpose among stakeholders.
In a reaction shortly after the session, Senator Daniel reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the realisation of Ijebu State, stressing that the goal was national development, not division.
“This is not about division but development. The Ijebu people deserve a voice, an identity, and a fair share of governance. The dream of Ijebu State is a dream of balanced federalism,” he said.
With the bill now proceeding to the committee stage for detailed legislative scrutiny and public hearing, expectations are rising among supporters who believe that the long-cherished dream of Ijebu State is closer than ever.
If eventually passed into law, Ijebu State will officially become Nigeria’s 37th state, restoring a proud cultural bloc known for its enterprise, education, and innovation.
