IGP appoints DCP Anthony Okon as new force spokesperson

‎The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has approved the appointment of DCP Anthony Okon Placid as the new Force Public Relations Officer.

DCP Placid, a highly decorated officer with extensive experience in administration, operations, and international peacekeeping, succeeds ACP Benjamin Hundeyin.

The appointment is part of a strategic reshuffle under IGP Disu’s leadership aimed at modernizing the Force's communication and operational framework.

‎Born on December 2, 1970, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, DCP Placid brings a robust academic and professional background to the role.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Geography and Regional Planning from the University of Uyo, a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy from the University of Jos, and a Bachelor of Laws from the National Open University of Nigeria.

He began his journey in the Nigeria Police Force in 1996 as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent and was commissioned in 1998.

‎Over nearly three decades, he has served in various critical capacities, including as the former Public Relations Officer for Adamawa State and the Police Staff College in Jos. His international experience includes serving as Chief of Training for the African Union Mission in Sudan and Head of Training and Development for the United Nations Mission in Darfur.

Domestically, he has served as a Divisional Police Officer in several divisions and as Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of operations in Akwa Ibom and Kogi States.

‎DCP Placid is an expert in International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights, having served as a trainer for the International Committee of the Red Cross.

He is also a graduate of the prestigious National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, in late 2025.

This leadership change coincides with the creation of a New Media Office within the Force, which will be headed by CSP Ali Giwa. This unit is expected to focus on digital engagement and real-time communication, reflecting the IGP’s commitment to a technology-driven police force.

‎As a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, DCP Placid is expected to leverage his wealth of experience in diplomacy and strategic communication to bridge the gap between the police and the public.
