By Tapre Timine, Bayelsa

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has officially unveiled six newly established secondary schools in Yenagoa, reinforcing his administration’s dedication to expanding educational infrastructure.

The commissioning, held in commemoration of his fifth anniversary in office, reflects a broader vision to uplift the state’s academic landscape and provide lasting benefits to future generations.

Ahead of the commissioning, the Bayelsa State Government had issued an open invitation to residents and stakeholders, urging them to partake in the landmark occasion.

The announcement, signed by the Commissioner for Education, Hon. Dr. Gentle E. Emelah, indicated that the event would take place on Friday, 28, March 2025, at 10:00 am, at Government Secondary School Biogbolo, Yenagoa.

The newly established schools include Government Secondary School, Ovom, Government Secondary School, Yenizue-Epie, Isaac Jasper Boro College of Education Demonstration Secondary School, Ekeki, Government Secondary School, Biogbolo, Community Secondary School, Akenfa, Government Secondary School, Igbogene, and Governor Diri’s Vision for Education

During the ceremony, Governor Diri reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to completing all ongoing initiatives under the Prosperity Government.

He stressed that these projects would serve as enduring landmarks, ensuring that young Bayelsans receive quality education in a conducive learning environment.

Diri said: “I’m happy today that we are here commissioning an educational facility. We can build roads. We can build all the bridges, but there is one thing that will be lacking and that one thing is building human beings. And these children that we see today are our walking stick. From these children you will see governors coming out of them. From these children we will have engineers. We will have technicians.

“You will also agree with me that Yenagoa has become a peaceful state capital that is attracting a whole lot of Nigerians across Nigeria into Yenagoa. If you go into these schools, you will see many Nigerians from different states who are eking out a living in Bayelsa state.

“I remember about a year ago, we had commissioned a secondary school at Ogbogoro built by government. Today we are here to commission six of such schools. And had already commissioned one in Swali. So if you add those two to this six, we have built eight new secondary schools by this administration in Yenagoa.

“One of the key pedestals that your government is standing on is education. And education will continue to occupy a priority space.

“Our goal is to ensure that we have a striving private sector in Bayelsa State that businesses can strive in Bayelsa State. So, on behalf of all of us, we want to say thank you.”

On behalf of the benefiting communities—Biogbolo, Yenizue-Gene, Igbogene, Ekeki, Ovom, and Akenfa—the Paramount Ruler of Biogbolo, His Royal Highness Frank Amos, conveyed profound appreciation to the government.

Amos assured that the schools would be diligently maintained and optimally utilised to serve the educational needs of the communities.

The inauguration drew a distinguished audience, including former Deputy Governor Retired Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John Jonah, Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere, State Assembly members, Secretary to the State Government Professor Nimbofa Ayaowei, Chief of Staff Dr. Peter Akpe, top government officials, local government chairmen, traditional leaders, educators, and students.
