Power-generating companies have lost an estimated ₦2.31 trillion between 2013 and September 2025 due to electricity power available for generation but left unused as a result of grid and operational challenges, fresh data released by the Association of Power Generation Companies (APGC) has revealed.

According to the data, the sector continues to grapple with inefficiencies that prevent optimal utilization of available capacity.

The Managing Director of APGC, Joy Ogaji, disclosed that between January and September 2025 alone, generation companies recorded losses of about ₦119 billion, with an average of 2,221 megawatts stranded each month.

Despite having a generation capacity that often exceeds 6,000 megawatts, only about 4,500 megawatts are typically transmitted through the national grid, leaving the rest  enough to power homes, factories, and businesses unutilized.

Ogaji attributed the persistent losses to weak grid infrastructure, irregular payment systems, and policy inconsistencies within the power sector.

She warned that the situation not only endangers the financial stability of generation companies but also poses a major obstacle to Nigeria’s industrial growth and economic development.
