By Taiwo Scholarstica
The Special Adviser on Security Matters to Sokoto State Governor, Col. Ahmed Usman (retd.), has described the death of former Nigerian Army spokesperson, Maj. Gen. Abubakar Rabe, in bandits’ captivity as a national tragedy.
Rabe reportedly died after spending about two weeks in the hands of his abductors. He was kidnapped alongside his wife while travelling to Katsina State.
In a statement on Sunday, Usman said the late general was a dedicated officer who served Nigeria with honour and commitment.
He said the manner of his death was painful and showed the seriousness of the country’s security challenges.
According to him, the incident should serve as a wake-up call for stronger efforts to tackle banditry and kidnapping across the country.
Usman also expressed concern that Rabe’s wife is still being held by the kidnappers and called on security agencies to work for her safe release.
He urged government authorities and security operatives to intensify efforts to rescue all persons currently in captivity.
He added that stronger cooperation between government, security agencies, and communities is needed to address insecurity.
Usman also called for the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the kidnapping and death of the retired general.
He extended condolences to the family of the deceased, the Nigerian Army, and all those affected by the tragedy.
He prayed for the peaceful rest of Gen. Rabe’s soul and for the safe return of his wife and other victims still in captivity.
