GBTQ couple ambushed, assaulted in Delta State amidst Nigeria’s Anti-Gay laws
Residents in Asaba, Delta State, Nigeria, ambushed, threatened, and assaulted a lesbian couple, accusing them of homosexuality, which is criminalized under Nigerian law.
The attack escalated to sexual violence and public humiliation, underscoring the risks LGBTQ individuals face in the region.
Following the incident, the couple’s identities were reported to the police.
One partner was detained, while the other, Judith Okereafor, fled to an undisclosed location after being summoned by authorities, fearing further persecution.
Nigeria’s laws criminalize same-sex relationships, with penalties of up to 14 years in prison, compounded by Sharia laws in northern states.
Activists call for urgent international attention to address the pervasive violence and discrimination against LGBTQ individuals in the country.
