Four vandalised towers collapse on Owerri-Ahoada 132kV line — TCN
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reported the collapse of four electricity transmission towers along the Owerri-Ahoada 132kV line due to vandalism.
In a statement released on Thursday in Abuja, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Mrs Ndidi Mbah, confirmed that the affected towers—T171 to T174—were severely damaged, leading to their collapse.
The incident occurred at approximately 6:00 pm on Tuesday and was identified following a failed trial reclosure that prompted an inspection of the line.
A “reclosure” is a mechanism that automatically attempts to restore power to a line after a fault has been detected and the system has temporarily shut it down.
“This act of vandalism has severely disrupted electricity supply to the Ahoada, Gbarain, and Yenagoa 132kV transmission substations, affecting parts of Rivers State and the entire Bayelsa State,” Mbah stated.
She added that TCN’s Port Harcourt Region General Manager, Mr Saheed Apka, led a team to the site to assess the scale of the destruction.
In response to the incident, Mbah said TCN was working urgently to mobilise personnel and materials to repair the damaged infrastructure and restore power transmission.
“We strongly condemn this act of sabotage, which continues to weaken efforts to establish a reliable and resilient transmission network. Once again, we urge local communities to collaborate with us in the critical fight against the destruction of power infrastructure,” she stated.
