Food security: Diri courts Army for large-scale farming partnership

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has called on the military high command to expand its operational scope in the Niger Delta by partnering with the state government on large-scale agricultural ventures to boost food security.

Governor Diri made the proposal on Thursday in Yenagoa during the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration held at the Peace Park.

While acknowledging the military’s primary role in preserving territorial integrity, the Governor argued that the armed forces could play a pivotal role in the nation’s economic recovery through agriculture.

He cited the successful model of the Nigerian Army Farms and Ranches Limited (NAFARL) as a blueprint that could be replicated in Bayelsa.

“On Tuesday, I flagged off the dry farming season programme in the state. In that spirit, and following the model of the Nigerian Army Farms and Ranches Limited (NAFARL), I invite the Armed Forces leadership to partner with the Bayelsa State Government in large‑scale agricultural endeavours that will bolster food security and promote sustainable livelihoods,” Diri stated.

Beyond the call for economic partnership, Governor Diri reiterated his administration’s commitment to the welfare of troops stationed in the state.

He referenced the recent completion and handover of residential accommodation to the Nigerian Army 16 Brigade at Elebele as a testament to his administration’s support for the military.

He, however, noted that the government cannot do it alone, charging corporate organisations and private individuals to support the armed forces through contributions that would improve their conditions of service.

“We know that behind every medal lies a story of sacrifice. Families who have lost breadwinners; veterans who have had their lives altered in their prime; and many who live with wounds, visible and invisible, that demand our practical compassion as much as our respect,” he added.

The event featured the traditional laying of wreaths at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Governor Diri led the rites, followed by the Speaker of the State Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere, and the Chief Judge, Justice Matilda Ayemieye.

Other dignitaries who paid their respects included the Chairman of the State Traditional Rulers Council, King Bubaraye Dakolo; Service Commanders; the Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Bayelsa State Council, Chief Baratuaipre Allison-Alanimi; and Mrs. Christina Boroni, who represented the widows of fallen heroes.
