Fish importation bill drops to ₦167.9bn in Q2 2026 — Report

Nigeria’s fish import bill fell by 14.8 percent to ₦167.91 billion in the second quarter of 2026, down from the ₦197.17 billion recorded in the corresponding period of 2025, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics‘ (NBS) Foreign Trade in Goods Statistics.

According to the NBS, the decrease represents a year-on-year reduction of ₦29.26 billion.

According to the report, Nigeria imported six major categories of fish during the two periods: blue whiting, herrings, mackerel, jack and horse mackerel, yellowfin tuna, and other unclassified frozen fish.

The decline in the fish import bill comes amid sustained efforts to boost domestic production and curb reliance on imported food products.

The NBS data provides a snapshot of Nigeria’s fish import trade during the quarter; however, the figures do not specify whether the drop in total value was driven by reduced import volumes, commodity price shifts, exchange-rate fluctuations, or a combination of these factors.
