In a move to improve accessibility, First Bank of Nigeria Limited has announced the rollout of specialized banking services for customers with visual and physical disabilities.
The initiative, according to the bank, underscores its commitment to financial inclusion and diversity, reinforcing its position as a leading service provider in West Africa.
Patrick Akhidenor, Chief Risk Officer and Chairman of the First Bank Sustainability Committee, said the programme is designed to ensure that all customers, regardless of ability, can independently and securely access financial services.
“Everyone deserves access to financial services, whether physically or digitally. We are providing solutions that are both accessible and affordable to visually impaired and physically challenged customers at all our touchpoints,” he said.
The phased rollout will extend across all subsidiaries and locations, introducing several innovations. These include transaction documents in braille, audio, large print, and digital formats; enhanced ATMs with high-contrast screens and voice-prompt commands; and debit cards featuring tactile motifs and braille inscriptions.
To further boost security, the bank will deploy enhanced soft PINs and tokens, while product brochures will be made available in accessible formats to improve engagement.
The initiative aligns with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s financial inclusion strategy as well as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which advocate equal access to financial services.
Beyond accessibility, the bank highlighted its broader diversity agenda. Women account for 41 per cent of its workforce and 37 per cent of management roles, while its First Bank Women Network continues to drive gender balance and leadership opportunities.
