Nigerian football legend Finidi George is celebrating his 55th birthday today, drawing tributes from fans, former clubs, and football institutions across the globe.
The former Super Eagles winger, who currently serves as head coach of Rivers United, acknowledged the milestone with a simple message on social media: “Grateful for another year 🙏.”

Clubs and organisations associated with his illustrious career, including AFC Ajax, Real Betis, and the Nigeria national football team, have celebrated him with highlight reels and goodwill messages.
The Super Eagles described him as “class on the pitch, leader on the sidelines,” while Real Betis praised him as one of Nigeria’s most iconic football figures.
Finidi remains widely respected for his achievements as a player, notably winning the UEFA Champions League with Ajax in 1995 and securing multiple Eredivisie titles during a golden era for the Dutch club. He also earned 62 caps for Nigeria, contributing significantly to the national team’s success in the 1990s.
Fans have revisited some of his standout moments, including memorable performances on the European stage, as part of the birthday celebrations.
However, the occasion has also prompted reflection on his recent managerial journey. While many have applauded his transition into coaching and his current role with Rivers United, some supporters recalled the challenges during his stint with the national team in 2024, where a string of results affected Nigeria’s qualification path for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Despite the mixed memories, the overwhelming sentiment remains one of appreciation for his enduring contribution to Nigerian and global football.
As tributes continue to pour in, Finidi’s legacy, both as a player and now as a coach, remains firmly etched in the history of the game.
