The Federal Government has called on Nigerians to shun divisive tendencies and strengthen national unity as the country marks 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance ahead of the 2026 Democracy Day celebration on June 12.
Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, made the call in a statement on Friday, saying Nigeria’s democracy can only thrive when citizens embrace unity, dialogue and responsible citizenship.
He said the nation’s progress, stability and democratic consolidation depend not only on government policies but also on the active participation and support of citizens.
Idris noted that the Federal Government joined millions of Nigerians in prayers during a special Juma’at service held as part of activities marking this year’s Democracy Day celebration.
He said the occasion provides an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey, celebrate the resilience of its institutions and honour the sacrifices of pro-democracy heroes, particularly the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola.
According to him, the country’s 27 years of uninterrupted civilian rule demonstrate the determination of Nigerians to uphold constitutional governance despite economic and political challenges.
The minister stated that the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to strengthening democratic governance, promoting national cohesion and addressing pressing national challenges.
He urged Nigerians to renew their commitment to unity and peaceful coexistence, stressing that the strength of the country lies in its diversity.
“As we celebrate Democracy Day, let us renew our commitment to unity, peaceful coexistence and responsible citizenship,” he said.
Idris also warned against divisive rhetoric, calling on citizens to embrace dialogue and promote values that reinforce national cohesion and democratic stability.
He described the late MKO Abiola as a symbol of courage and resilience whose legacy continues to inspire Nigeria’s democratic journey.
The minister expressed optimism that through collective effort, Nigeria can achieve a stronger, more prosperous and more united future.
He also prayed for continued peace, stability and prosperity in the country, while calling for divine guidance for leaders and protection for security agencies.
