FG urged to cut diplomatic ties with Israel over Gaza crisis

An Islamic group, Harakatul Islamiyyah, has urged the Federal Government to sever diplomatic ties with Israel over the ongoing conflict in Gaza and rising tensions involving Iran.

The call was made in Ilorin during the commemoration of the 2026 Quds Day by the group’s leader, AbdulRazzaq AbdulWahab Al-Amin Aladodo. He said the prolonged suffering of Palestinians reflects a lack of unity among Muslim countries and the wider global community.

Aladodo said Quds Day symbolises solidarity with Palestinians and highlights the religious and political importance of Masjid Al-Aqsa, regarded as Islam’s third holiest site.

“The persistent suffering of Palestinians and the desecration of Masjid Al-Aqsa point to injustice in the global order,” he said, linking the crisis to developments following the creation of Israel in 1948 and the displacement of Palestinians.

He also referred to the escalation of hostilities after the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas, saying the fallout has deepened tensions across the Middle East, including confrontations involving Iran.

“There is a clear connection between ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and the Palestinian struggle, which must not be ignored,” he said.

Aladodo called on Nigeria to go beyond routine appeals for ceasefire and take a firmer diplomatic position.

“It amounts to tokenism to merely call for a ceasefire when the aggressors are known,” he said, urging the government to cut ties with Israel over alleged human rights violations and restrictions on worship at Al-Aqsa Mosque.

He also urged Muslim-majority countries to set aside internal divisions and prioritise humanitarian support for Palestinians, warning that disunity weakens collective action.

In a separate Quds Day message, Saad Muhommad Tohir Olawale called on Muslim leaders to address internal challenges and uphold core Islamic principles.

He said many of the crises facing the Muslim world stem from weak leadership and a departure from ethical values.

“If the Ummah seeks restoration and stability, it must return to justice and moral discipline,” he said.

The event ended with prayers for unity and peace across the Muslim world.
