FG unveils AI model to support local languages

The Federal Government has launched a new artificial intelligence (AI) model tailored to Nigeria’s indigenous languages, in a bold step to promote cultural preservation and inclusion in the nation’s digital economy.

The initiative, championed by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, is designed to support more than 500 local languages. Tijani explained that the move was inspired by India’s successful development of a sovereign large language model (LLM) for regional languages, which has strengthened access to technology for millions.

Recent figures from TechCabal (2025) revealed that Nigeria has already gathered significant linguistic data covering Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, Tiv and other languages. These languages, often overlooked in global AI systems, form part of the foundation for the new model, which aims to make digital tools more inclusive for local communities.

The project marks an important challenge to the dominance of English-centric AI models, which have historically limited access to advanced technologies for non-English speakers. By embedding indigenous languages into AI systems, the government seeks to bridge the digital divide and empower citizens across different regions.

Tijani, who holds a doctorate in innovation from the University of Leicester, stressed that his ministry is determined to position Nigeria as a key player in global AI development. His international background and experience, he noted, would help align the country’s local priorities with emerging international trends.

The rollout could transform access to digital services in Nigeria while strengthening identity and culture in the fast-evolving technology space. The initiative, they added, underscores government’s commitment to ensuring that no community is left behind in the digital economy.
