The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the postponement of the 5th Global High-Level Ministerial Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), which was originally scheduled to take place in Abuja from June 28 to 30, 2026.

The announcement was made public through an official statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, signed by the Coordinating Minister, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate.

According to the Ministry, the decision to defer the high-profile event followed extensive consultations with key stakeholders and international partners involved in the summit’s preparations.

A new date for the global conference will be communicated in due course.

The Ministry expressed its regrets over any disruptions the scheduling change might cause, while emphasizing its gratitude to the international community for its ongoing cooperation.

“The Federal Government deeply regrets any inconvenience this postponement may cause and appreciates the understanding, support, and continued cooperation of all stakeholders,” the statement read.

Nigeria also extended its appreciation to the Troika, the Global Leaders Group on Antimicrobial Resistance, the Quadripartite Joint Secretariat on AMR, member states, development partners, international organizations, civil society groups, academia, and youth networks for their steadfast support.

Reaffirming its commitment to tackling global health challenges, the government noted that Nigeria remains honored to convene the global gathering at a later date.

“Nigeria remains honored to host this important global gathering and reaffirms its commitment to advancing international collaboration and collective action to address the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance through the One Health approach,” the Ministry added.

Preparatory activities are set to continue under the supervision of the Local Organizing Committee alongside relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to ensure a seamless transition and successful hosting once the new dates are finalized.
