The Federal Government has unveiled a livestock development roadmap aimed at transforming Plateau State into a major livestock production and processing hub in Nigeria.

Idi Mukhtar Maiha, the Minister of Livestock Development, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, saying the plan covers ranching, feedlots, dairy production, and livestock processing.

He said the initiative includes collaboration with the Defence Headquarters on the National Ranching Policy and the development of a 30,000-hectare ranch within the Wase Grazing Reserve.

According to him, the project is designed to boost productivity, reduce grazing-related conflicts, and support sustainable livelihoods.

“The future of livestock in Plateau must be organised, scientific, inclusive, peaceful and profitable,” the Minister said.

He added that livestock development should be treated as a commercial enterprise capable of driving rural transformation, wealth creation and social stability.

Plateau State was selected for the initiative due to its strong livestock base, veterinary institutions, favourable climate, and transport network, he said.

The Minister also announced the commencement of a 500-bulls-per-day abattoir in Jos, describing it as part of efforts to modernise Nigeria’s red meat value chain.

“This facility will provide a modern, hygienic and efficient meat processing environment that meets global standards while creating opportunities across the entire livestock value chain,” he said.

The Ministry said the abattoir will include modern veterinary inspection systems, hygienic processing facilities, and waste management structures.

It added that by-products such as hides, skins, bones, and fats will be processed into industrial inputs.

The project is expected to generate between 7,000 and 10,000 direct and indirect jobs across the livestock value chain.

The Minister called on stakeholders to support the initiative, urging stronger collaboration between government, investors, and host communities.

The Federal Government said the project aligns with the National Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy (NL-GAS) 2025–2035 and the Renewed Hope Agenda.
