FG launches Tax Ombud platforms to boost public trust

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to building a transparent, accountable, and citizen-focused tax administration system, describing the newly established Tax Ombud Office as a major milestone in strengthening public trust and fairness.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated this on Monday in Abuja during the official unveiling of the Tax Ombud Office’s website and the launch of its Toll-Free Call Centre.
Speaking at the event, Idris emphasized that effective communication and citizen engagement are central to the success of the ongoing economic reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He noted that while taxation is critical for providing the resources required to invest in national infrastructure, healthcare, education, transportation, and security, its sustainability relies on more than just enforcement.
“Tax administration cannot succeed on enforcement alone,” the Minister stated. “It must be supported by public trust, transparency, fairness, and effective communication.”
The Minister explained that the Tax Ombud Office will serve as an essential bridge between taxpayers and tax authorities, providing Nigerians with a fair and professional mechanism to resolve complaints.
He commended the introduction of the website and the toll-free call centre, noting that these digital tools will eliminate financial and communication barriers, allowing citizens to easily seek information and resolve tax disputes.
Idris also issued a warning regarding the dangers of misinformation, which he said often fuels public distrust and creates resistance to economic reforms.
To counter this, he called for stronger collaboration among government institutions, the media, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to ensure strategic and sustained public communication.
Underscoring the importance of civic education, the Minister pledged that the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation would partner with the Tax Ombud Office to sensitize the public on tax reforms, taxpayers’ rights, and complaint-resolution channels.
He maintained that proper education builds a culture of national participation and shared responsibility, rather than just driving revenue generation.
The event drew key administration officials, highlighting the government’s collaborative approach to fiscal reform. Among the dignitaries in attendance were the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele; the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack; and the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Tax Ombud Office, John C. Nwabueze.
