FG clears outstanding AFCON match bonuses for Super Eagles

The Federal Government has confirmed the payment of all outstanding match bonuses owed to the Super Eagles at the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, ending days of uncertainty surrounding the team’s welfare.
The Minister of State for Finance, Mrs Doris Uzoka-Anite, disclosed the development on Thursday via her verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, explaining that administrative and foreign exchange bottlenecks had been resolved in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
According to the minister, all group-stage match bonuses have now been fully released and cleared regulatory processes, with transfers to players’ domiciliary accounts already in progress.
She added that the government introduced a fast-track foreign exchange conversion system to meet players’ preference for payments in foreign currency.
The development follows reports that the Super Eagles had threatened to boycott their next AFCON fixture against Algeria in Marrakech over unpaid bonuses, with players reportedly refusing to train or travel until the issue was resolved.
Uzoka-Anite assured that measures have been put in place to prevent future delays, stressing that the government remains committed to the welfare of the national team as the tournament enters its knockout stages.
“Our focus remains entirely on supporting the team so they can maintain their momentum and bring the trophy home,” she stated.
