FCTA to collect taxes on outdoor advertisement, signage in AMAC
Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) has ceded the collection of taxes, levies and permits of outdoor advertisement and signage within the council to the FCTA Department of Outdoor Advertisement and Signage (DOAS).
This was made known by Mr Abdullahi Candido, AMAC Chairman, at a joint press conference organised by the council and DOAS on Monday in Abuja.
Candido said the decision to concede the responsibility became necessary to harmonise collections, avoid double taxation, improve the ease of doing business and ensure seamless tax collections in the council.
“Following several stakeholders meetings on the above issue, both parties, the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) and the Department of Outdoor Advertisement and Signage (DOAS) hereby wish to announce that an amicable agreement has been reached in interest of the general public.
“Whereas Section 7 and the fourth schedule of the 1999 constitution, states that taxes and levies approved list for collection, vested the powers on local government areas or area councils as in the case of the FCT to collect advertisement permit, taxes and levies.
“In this case, the Abuja Municipal Area Council after due consultations by relevant stakeholders and in recognition of subsisting agreements and associated by-laws, the two institutions have resolved.
“That henceforth, all collections with regards to outdoor advertisements and signage including Mobile, 1st party and 3rd party advertisements, be carried out by DOAS on behalf of Abuja Municipal Area Council,” he said.
Dr Baba-Gana Adam, Director, DOAS, appreciated the chairman and pledged of its departments readiness to partner with AMAC in every possible way.
He, however, called on the general public to desist from floating illegal signage and placing banners that deface the area council.
