Father of alleged queer man dies after brutal attack

Mr. Okpe Jack Odey, the father of an ostensibly gay man, Monday Benedict Okpe, was brutally attacked by a group of men purportedly affiliated with the Oodua People's Congress.
In February 2020, Benedict Okpe was summoned by the Nigerian Police for questioning regarding allegations of being part of the LGBTQ community and practicing bisexuality. After a thorough investigation, the police concluded that there was insufficient evidence to substantiate the claims. Despite the police findings, the community continued to report Benedict Okpe and his partner, Matthew Okoni, accusing them of engaging in activities deemed unacceptable. Notably, an affidavit was sworn in the Nigerian High Court regarding these allegations.
Following an intelligence and continuous reports from a jingoist and close neighbour about Benedict Okpe and his partner, engaging in indecent activities, which led to the involvement and an action taken by the affiliated Oodua People's Congress (OPC) in April 10, 2023.
Upon the arrival of the affiliated Ooduwa People's Congress at the Okpe residence, Benedict’s siblings scampered and fled off panicking in terror. Mr. Okpe Jack Odey, Benedict's father, stood his ground to defend his son, in the course of that, the OPC members severely and gravely attacked Mr. Odey, and was brutally beaten, and slashed. He suffered severe injuries, including deep cuts.
Mr. Odey was admitted to the Lagos State Teaching Hospital, eventually succumbing to his severe injuries. Unfortunately, despite all efforts to save him he gave up the ghost in April 14, 2023 at 2:38am. This tragic incident unveiled the genuine hidden same-sex relationship between Mr. Okpe Jack Odey’s son, Benedict Okpe and his partner Matthew Okoni, who were apparently involved in bisexuality and as members of LGBTQ community.
This nasty event highlights the violent consequences of the vigilantism purportedly affiliated with the OPC and the need for understanding, tolerance, and legal protection for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation.
Moreover, the relevance of the affiliated OPC is to promote peace and resolution of conflicts rather than vandalism in a society where understanding, empathy, and respect for human rights prevail, ensuring that everyone can live without fear of persecution. May Odey’s memory inspire us towards a more compassionate and just world as further investigation continues…
