ENL consortium denies fire outbreak at Apapa Terminal

…Confirms incident was contained smoke emission

ENL Consortium, operator of a leading cargo terminal at the Lagos Port Complex in Apapa, has dismissed reports suggesting a cargo vessel caught fire at its facility on Saturday, clarifying that only smoke was observed and swiftly managed.

In a statement issued by Mr Mark Walsh, Managing Director of ENL Consortium, the company explained that the incident involved smoke emission from one of the vessel’s hatches and not a fire outbreak.

“There was absolutely no naked flame on the ship,” Walsh said, adding that the terminal’s emergency response team quickly traced the source of the smoke and brought the situation under control in accordance with standard safety procedures.

He confirmed that no lives were threatened, and there was no damage to cargo, machinery, or infrastructure at the terminal.

Walsh reaffirmed ENL Consortium’s strong safety culture, highlighting the incident as a demonstration of the company’s preparedness and efficiency in handling emergencies.

He expressed concern about misleading reports surrounding the incident and called on members of the public and the media to rely on verified sources and avoid sensationalising matters that have been professionally addressed.

“Port operations at the ENL Terminal remain safe, stable, and fully operational,” Walsh stated.

He concluded by reaffirming the consortium’s commitment to safeguarding personnel, cargo, and facilities through adherence to international safety protocols.
