EndSARS fallout: Family declared wanted over alleged filming of Lekki shooting

Security sources have confirmed that a Nigerian family has been declared wanted by authorities in connection with the 2020 #EndSARS protests.

The warrant is reportedly centered on the husband, Ismail Olanrewaju Soremekun, a civil rights campaigner, who is accused of filming soldiers allegedly opening fire on unarmed protesters during the demonstrations in October 2020.

The development signals continued efforts by authorities to trace individuals accused of exploiting the protests to incite unrest and destruction across the country.

Mr. Soremekun, who his wife identified as a coordinator of the protests, allegedly captured footage that showed military personnel shooting at civilians at the height of the #EndSARS movement.

This video, which reportedly circulated among activists, is believed to have drawn the attention of security agencies, who declared him wanted shortly after the incident.

Sources indicate that the declaration was later extended to his wife, Hannah Olufunke Soremekun, and their children, following their attempt to evade security dragnet. The family reportedly fled their residence at No. 14, Oke-Ola Street, Agbowo, Ibadan, Oyo State, leaving the country on November 27, 2020.

Human rights observers have expressed profound concern over the persistent targeting of individuals associated with the 2020 demonstrations. They warn that the continued intimidation and pursuit of activists undermine Nigeria’s democratic principles and fundamental civic freedoms, particularly the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression.
