Elumelu donates N25bn to support Lagos’ N500bn food security initiative

Chairman of Heirs Holdings and United Bank for Africa (UBA), Tony Elumelu, has pledged N25 billion to the ‘Produce for Lagos’ programme a N500 billion initiative launched by the Lagos State Government to tackle food insecurity and ensure long-term access to affordable, nutritious food.
Elumelu’s pledge is the single largest private sector support so far towards the agricultural programme, which is designed to boost local food production and create jobs, particularly for the youth.
Speaking at the launch of the initiative, Elumelu underscored the urgent need to strengthen Nigeria’s agricultural sector to solve both hunger and unemployment challenges.
“An hungry person is an angry person,” he said. “Agriculture and the food system are key to addressing the issue of youth unemployment. We must cultivate our arable land and engage our young people.”
He praised the Lagos State Government for being proactive and supportive of private sector collaboration, noting that the ‘Produce for Lagos’ initiative aligns with broader national goals to enhance food security and economic resilience.
“This is a critical initiative we should all support. We believe in this cause and together we will bring the vision to life. You’ve done your part, and we in the private sector must also step up,” Elumelu said.
He confirmed that the Tony Elumelu Foundation, Transcorp Group, Heirs Holdings, and UBA would all be involved in supporting the programme. He added that Lagos had always been at the forefront of development efforts and that the initiative presents a major opportunity for public-private synergy.
Recalling past interventions, Elumelu said, “During COVID-19, we supported Lagos State with N1 billion. Lagos is home to us all. This isn’t just about obligation it’s about understanding the impact. We are ready to do more.”
