Eight dead, communities stranded as terrorists bomb bridge in Niger

Eight people were killed on Monday when terrorists detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) along Luma Road in the Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

The attack, which occurred in the early hours of the morning, involved multiple bombings across several communities.

The attackers reportedly used a similar explosive device to destroy a key bridge connecting the Luma, Babana, and Agwara communities. The destruction has severed a vital route for residents traveling to the Babana border market, a major commercial hub that operates every Monday.

A reliable local source confirmed that the bridge bombing took place around 5:00 a.m.

The source noted that the collapse of the Luma-Babana bridge has effectively prevented villagers from crossing into neighboring areas to trade.

The attackers reportedly detonated additional bombs between Rafingiwa and Babana, as well as in the Woro and Kaiama areas, forcing terrified residents to flee their homes.

Alhaji Mohammed Nasir Abdullahi, Chairman of the Borgu Local Government Area, confirmed the incidents when contacted.

He stated that an attack had indeed occurred and that a bridge was damaged, noting that authorities are still working to determine the full magnitude of the destruction.

He added that officials have already been dispatched to the affected areas to assess the situation on the ground.
