The Senator representing Edo Central Senatorial District, Joseph Ikpea, has praised Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, for taking swift action to prevent a possible mass abduction of students in parts of the state.
Governor Okpebholo had on Tuesday ordered the temporary closure of Ososo Grammar School, Ososo Comprehensive High School, and Makeke Secondary School in Akoko Edo Local Government Area of Edo North following a security alert from the Department of State Services (DSS).
The intelligence report reportedly warned of a planned attack by suspected bandits targeting schools in the area, prompting the government’s precautionary decision.
Reacting in a statement issued on Thursday in Benin City, Senator Ikpea described the governor’s action as a sign of responsible leadership and commitment to protecting lives.
He said the decision to shut down the schools, though difficult, was necessary given the current security situation in the country.
According to him, Okpebholo demonstrated urgency and good judgment by acting on credible intelligence instead of ignoring the warning.
Ikpea noted that while the closure may disrupt academic activities, especially as students prepare for examinations, it was a safer option than risking a possible attack.
He also called on Nigerians to support security efforts by staying alert and reporting suspicious movements in their communities.
The senator urged residents of Edo Central not to treat the security warning as a concern limited to Edo North, stressing that criminal elements do not respect regional boundaries.
He further appealed for stronger public cooperation with security agencies, saying community vigilance is now essential in tackling insecurity.
Ikpea also commended the DSS and other security agencies for their intelligence work and collaboration with the state government, adding that he would continue to support measures aimed at improving security in Edo State.
