Dredgers association urges Umahi to distinguish between reclamation, industrial dredging

The Dredgers Association of Nigeria (DAN) has called on the Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, to carefully differentiate between reclamation dredging and industrial dredging, following recent remarks linking dredging activities to the deteriorating state of the Eko and Carter bridges in Lagos.

In a statement issued after an emergency meeting in Lagos, the association refuted claims made by the Minister that dredging operations were responsible for the poor structural conditions of the bridges.

DAN insisted that its members engage solely in industrial dredging, which is strictly regulated and conducted far from bridge foundations.

“We wish to clarify that industrial dredging carried out by our members is not the cause of the damage observed in these structures,” said Mr. Richard Ntan, General Secretary of the Association.

He stressed that industrial dredging focuses on creek and lagoon centers, playing a crucial role in maintaining navigable waterways essential for Lagos’s economic activity.

The association emphasized that reclamation dredging, often unregulated and carried out near infrastructure like the Third Mainland Bridge, should not be confused with industrial dredging.

DAN supported the Minister’s concern over such operations but urged him to identify and hold the correct parties accountable.

“We at DAN support the Minister that reclamation dredging activities should not take place near bridges,” Ntan said.

“However, it is important the Minister finds out the true identity of those dredging near bridges and does not lump our members in with such operators.”

DAN reiterated its commitment to responsible dredging practices and national infrastructure protection, expressing willingness to collaborate with government agencies to ensure environmental safety and sustainable development.
