Dr Odusote: Ushering in a new era at NLS

For over six decades, the roll call of Directors-General at the Nigerian Law School has read like an exclusive club of men. From its establishment in 1962, through military regimes and democratic republics, the highest seat in Nigeria’s legal education system has remained out of reach for women, until now.

In a move that is being hailed as a monumental victory for gender inclusion in the legal profession, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Dr. Olugbemisola Titilayo Odusote as the first female Director-General of the Nigerian Law School.
Effective January 10, 2026, Dr. Odusote will take the helm of an institution that shapes the minds of every lawyer called to the Nigerian Bar. Her appointment is not just a change of guard; it is a rewriting of history.

Dr. Odusote’s rise to the top was not overnight. It is the culmination of a 25-year career defined by academic rigour and administrative grit. She joined the Law School as a lecturer in 2001 and steadily climbed the ladder serving as Head of the Academic Department, Director of Academics, and most recently, the Deputy Director-General and Head of the Lagos Campus.

Her portfolio is intimidatingly impressive: an LL.B and LL.M from Obafemi Awolowo University, a PhD from the University of Surrey (UK), and a stint as a visiting scholar at Nottingham Trent University. Beyond the CV lies a message for every woman in the corporate and academic world, "competence eventually commands the room."

Dr. Odusote did not just get the job, she earned it through decades of service, managing the complex Lagos campus and proving her mettle in a high-pressure environment.

As she prepares to succeed Professor Isa Hayatu Chiroma, Dr. Odusote carries the torch for every female lawyer who has ever walked the halls of the Law School, proving that the pinnacle of the profession is no longer a men-only zone.
