The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day celebration.

The announcement was made by Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, on behalf of the Federal Government

The government said June 12 remains a significant date in Nigeria’s history, set aside to honour the courage, resilience and sacrifices of Nigerians whose struggles contributed to the entrenchment of democratic governance in the country.

The minister restated the Federal Government’s commitment to preserving democratic values, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability and inclusive governance.

According to the statement, the administration remains committed to upholding those principles and strengthening democratic institutions across the country.

Tunji-Ojo also stated that the Ministry of Interior, working with relevant security agencies, would continue to strengthen internal security measures aimed at protecting lives and property nationwide.

He noted that a secure and stable environment remains essential for democratic governance and national development.

The minister called on Nigerians to use the Democracy Day holiday as an opportunity for civic reflection and renewed commitment to national unity and responsible citizenship.

“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens,” he said.

The statement added that the legacy of those who fought for democracy continues to shape the values and responsibilities of the Nigerian state and serves as a reminder of the need to safeguard the country’s democratic gains.

The statement was signed by Magdalene Ajani, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior.
