Delta Gov. reassures oil firms of security, government backing

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to providing a secure and stable environment for oil and gas companies operating within the state.

He gave the reassurance on Thursday in Asaba while receiving senior executives of Renaissance Africa Energy Company. Renaissance Africa Energy Holdings is a consortium of four prominent Nigerian independent oil and gas companies. The group recently finalised the acquisition of equity interest in Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC).

Governor Oborevwori pointed out that crude oil remains the backbone of Nigeria’s economy and underlined the importance of forging robust, long-term partnerships that generate value for all parties involved.

He urged oil firms operating in the state to establish constructive and cooperative relationships with their host communities in order to foster the trust and goodwill essential for smooth and uninterrupted operations.

“The Chairman and Managing Director are individuals who have worked extensively in this region. They both have experience with Shell, so they understand the system and its intricacies,” the governor said.

Reflecting on his personal history, Oborevwori recalled his own early engagement with Shell.

“In my dealings with Shell, I happened to be the youngest Community Chairman in the entire Western Division when I led the Osubi Community. We used to convene People’s Parliament sessions and attend oil seminars alongside top leaders from across the region.

“These experiences helped shape my approach. I have always believed more in dialogue than confrontation. With your leadership in this company, I am confident you will perform exceptionally well.”

The governor described Delta as one of the most stable and peaceful states in the South-South region, noting that all oil installations across the state remain secure.

“Since I assumed office, we have not recorded any incidents of attacks on oil facilities. Delta is currently the highest oil-producing state in the country, and I hope we maintain that leading position.

“Let us strengthen partnerships that benefit all stakeholders. The state government will provide full support for your success because your success directly contributes to ours, especially through tax revenues. You have our complete backing,” he assured.

In his remarks, the Chairman of Renaissance Africa Energy, Dr Layi Fatoma, expressed gratitude to the governor for receiving the delegation.

He explained that the visit was intended to formally introduce the company’s management team to the state leadership.

The company’s Managing Director, Mr Tony Attah, elaborated on the organisation’s ambitions, stating that their immediate goal was to begin operations in the Niger Delta as a springboard toward enhancing Nigeria’s energy security, with broader plans for expansion across Africa.

“We intend to take a leading role in Africa’s energy landscape, and that journey must begin here at home. It is important for us to reconnect with our roots and engage meaningfully with you.

“We are fully aligned with the M.O.R.E Agenda of the Delta State Government. This country cannot progress without oil and gas, and as it stands, we are well-positioned to take the lead in the industry.

“We are confident that, as a 100 per cent Nigerian entity, the support you extended to Shell will be exceeded in your dealings with us. We look forward to a productive partnership. Thank you for welcoming us,” Attah concluded.
