Customs strengthens border security in Ogun

The Nigeria Customs Service, Ogun I Area Command, has intensified efforts to strengthen border security through engagement with traditional institutions across border communities in Ogun State.
The Acting Customs Area Controller, Oladapo Afeni, led a delegation on a courtesy visit to the Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, Kehinde Olugbenle, at his palace in Ilaro.

Customs said the visit was aimed at strengthening collaboration with host communities to curb the smuggling of prohibited items, including small arms, light weapons, and illicit drugs, through land borders.
Afeni described Yewaland as a strategic location due to its proximity to international borders, adding that community cooperation is critical to safeguarding national security.
“Our borders must not become gateways for elements seeking to destabilise the country. We are strengthening surveillance and enforcement to prevent exploitation,” he said.
The Command said it has introduced measures, including 24-hour monitoring of identified smuggling routes, enhanced inspection of transit goods, and improved communication channels with community leaders to support intelligence gathering.

In his response, Olugbenle commended the initiative and reaffirmed the commitment of the Yewa people to maintaining peace and security, noting that traditional institutions play a key role in sensitising residents against illegal activities.
The Controller also visited Adekola Oje Oladokun and Mathew Akindele, where he reiterated that national security requires collective responsibility.
Customs said the engagements form part of a broader strategy to strengthen partnerships with stakeholders while ensuring compliance with trade regulations and border security laws.
