C’River: FRSC cautions truck drivers on reckless driving

By Christian Njoku

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Cross River has reiterated its commitment to tackle unsafe practices by some truck drivers in the state.

The Sector Commander, Innocent Etuk said in a statement in Calabar on Sunday that the attitude of some truck drivers had led to series of fatal crashes in the state.

Etuk said that the recent crash that resulted in the death of three students and a staff member of the University of Cross River was avoidable.

The FRSC official identified brake failure, speeding and wrongful overtaking by truck drivers as major causes of crashes.

He urged truck owners to ensure regular maintenance of their vehicles, and provide proper training for their drivers.

Etuk further stated that loss of control by heavy-duty vehicles had continued to result in deaths and injuries.

“We urge sister agencies and transport unions to join us in deepening the message of road safety.

“We also need to collaborate in the enforcement of road traffic laws in order to drastically reduce road crashes,” he said.

He said that the corps would ‘leave no stone unturned’ to ensure that road traffic laws offenders were prosecuted.

“Passengers should speak up when drivers act recklessly, our collective responsibility is needed in road safety,” he said.
