Court remands 3 men for alleged possession of firearms

Magistrate A.O. Idiagbon of an Ilorin Magistrates’ Court on Thursday ordered the remand of three suspects in the correctional facility for allegedly being in possession of illegal firearms.

Jamiu Bello, Kolawole Wasiu and Yusuf Babatunde of no fixed addresses were arraigned on a two-court charge of criminal conspiracy and being in possession of illegal firearms.

The charges are contrary to sections 97 and 3(1) of the robbery and firearms (special provision) Act, laws of the Federation, 2004.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Abdullahi Sanni, said the Secretary to a community at Taiwo area, Ilorin, one Abubakar Ridone, informed the police of the suspects’ hideout at Ariyo compound in the same area.

He added that the policemen swung into action, arrested the suspects and recovered two pistols from them.

He said that investigation conducted by the Anti-kidnapping squad revealed that the suspects could not give satisfactory reason for their presence at the location and that they were criminals terrorising the area.

He urged the court to order the suspects’ remand; saying that the offence of illegal possession of firearms would not attract bail.

The magistrate thereafter adjourned the case until Aug.3 for further mention.
