Car dealer in court for alleged N6.6m fraud
A 38-year-old car dealer, Sani Farouq, on Tuesday appeared before a Kaduna High Court for alleged N6.6 million fraud.
Farouq was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on a charge of fraud. He, however, pleaded not guilty.
EFCC counsel, Mr. E.K. Garba, told the court that, sometime in Nov. 2021, the defendant fraudulently collected N6.6 million from the complainant to buy two Toyota Corolla cars for him from the U.S.
Garba said that the defendant diverted the sum to his personal use.
“All efforts made by the complainant to get his money back proved abortive,” the prosecutor said.
According to the EFCC, the alleged offence contravenes Section 1(1) (b) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006.
Defence counsel, Mr. Haruna Mohammed, urged the court to grant his client bail on liberal terms.
Justice Darius Khobo granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
Khobo ordered that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and own landed property.
He adjourned the case until Sept. 29, for hearing.
