BUA Foods vs Nestle Nigeria Plc: BUA Foods triumphs

By Layola Sofiyyah

In this edition of Test of Strength, we analyze the divergent H1 performances of food sector heavyweights, BUA Foods Plc and Nestlé Nigeria Plc. Both companies delivered impressive results that highlight fascinating growth stories.

BUA through relentless expansion and Nestlé via a strategic turnaround creating a compelling contrast on the competitive scoreboard.

This Test of Strength reveals two contrasting, yet equally robust, strategies for navigating a challenging economic environment. While BUA demonstrates the power of sustained dominance, Nestle's performance is a masterclass in strategic redemption.

The topline battle: Growth and scale

BUA Foods, the incumbent giant, posted a commanding ₦912.5 billion in revenue, marking a solid 36% Year-on-Year (Y-o-Y) growth. This sustained trajectory underscores its successful strategy of diversification and leveraging scale, particularly through affordable offerings. BUA clearly wins the scale battle.

Nestle, though smaller in absolute terms, delivered a more rapid acceleration, recording ₦581.1 billion in revenue with a blistering 43% Y-o-Y increase. This pace suggests a sharp rebound in consumer demand for its key product lines, signaling effective market penetration and pricing strategies. Nestle wins the growth rate battle.

Profitability

This is where BUA establishes its clear overall lead. BUA not only maintained but significantly amplified its profit position, with Profit Before Tax (PBT) soaring by 101% to ₦276.1 billion. Its Profit After Tax (PAT) of ₦260.1 billion nearly doubled the previous year's figure, reinforcing its operational efficiency and market pricing power. BUA overwhelmingly dominates the absolute profit metric.

Nestle's profit figures represent a powerful financial recovery. After a devastating ₦252.5 billion loss in H1 2024, the company staged a decisive comeback, reporting a PBT of ₦88.4 billion and a PAT of ₦50.6 billion. This turnaround is arguably the more consequential story, as it decisively returns the company to stability and successfully restores investor confidence. Nestle wins the turnaround metric.

Operational resilience: Margins and efficiency

Both companies demonstrated impressive cost management. They managed to defend near-uniform gross profit margins: BUA at 37.2% and Nestle at a slightly higher 38.7%. This proximity in margin efficiency, despite the difference in scale, is a testament to sophisticated operational strategies. Nestle narrowly wins the Gross Profit Margin metric.

Nestle's drive for efficiency is further highlighted by its Operating Profit, which more than doubled to ₦130.4 billion. This suggests that the turnaround was supported by disciplined cost optimization.

Balance sheet

BUA's balance sheet reflects its sheer scale and market confidence. Total assets climbed to a formidable ₦1.33 trillion, underpinned by robust shareholders' equity of ₦689.1 billion. This provides a deep capital base for sustained growth. BUA is the clear winner in balance sheet size and capital depth.

Nestle's focus was on financial clean-up and debt reduction. The improvement in equity by ₦50.6 billion was crucial, and the early repayment of a USD 20 million forex debt signals a strong commitment to de-risking the balance sheet. Nestle wins the financial deleveraging metric.

Conclusion

The H1 2025 results show that while Nestle executed an exemplary strategic redemption with superior revenue growth and gross margins, BUA Foods remains the dominant financial force. BUA's sheer scale, absolute profit generation (PBT and PAT), and capital depth solidify its position as the clear winner. Nestle's performance is crucial for stability, but BUA continues its relentless march of dominance.
