BEDC condemns Ondo Govt’s alleged takeover plan as illegal, disruptive

The Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) and its subsidiary, BEDC Electricity Ondo Limited (BEOL), have strongly rejected an alleged attempt by the Ondo State Government to assume control of electricity distribution within the state.

The firm issued a statement on Friday in Benin, responding to comments by the Special Assistant to the Ondo State Governor on Power, which announced the government’s intended move. BEDC described the action as unlawful, provocative, and damaging to ongoing partnerships.

Mr Collins Igwe, BEDC’s Chief Revenue Cycle Manager, stressed that while the Electricity Act 2023 grants states the power to regulate their electricity markets, it does not permit unilateral takeover of distribution operations.

He noted that any such attempt would breach the joint communiqué agreed upon during a strategic meeting between BEDC/BEOL and the Ondo State Government aimed at tackling the region’s power challenges.

“This kind of move undermines the spirit of cooperation and mutual understanding that was established to resolve electricity issues in the state. We hold a legal mandate to operate in Ondo, and this attempted intrusion is unacceptable,” Igwe stated.

He pointed out that the power supply difficulties in Ondo reflect broader national challenges and reaffirmed BEDC’s commitment, through BEOL, to delivering sustainable, long-term solutions.

“We welcome partnerships, but any approach must respect proper legal procedures and the agreements made in good faith,” he added.

Igwe explained that the jointly signed communiqué outlined a clear roadmap for collaborative solutions, recommending the formation of a power supply committee to improve electricity access in underserved and unserved communities through a mutually agreed framework.

The company warned that any unilateral interference in its operations would breach existing agreements and could disrupt electricity distribution services across Ondo State.

BEDC reiterated that it remains the duly licensed operator in Ondo and will protect its infrastructure in accordance with Nigerian laws and regulatory standards.

“We urge those attempting to interfere with our infrastructure to cease immediately to avoid legal repercussions,” the statement said.

Igwe also called on the public to disregard the controversial announcement, describing it as misleading, unauthorised, and harmful to ongoing cooperative efforts.

He reaffirmed the company’s dedication to enhancing electricity services in Ondo State, with a focus on transparency, legal compliance, and active community engagement.

“We remain committed to constructive dialogue with all stakeholders to ensure continued progress and stability in Ondo State’s power sector,” Igwe concluded.
