Police in Bauchi have detained five persons, including a woman, on charges of stealing and trafficking tricycles that were originally stolen from Kano State.
A statement released on Tuesday by SP Ahmed Wakil, the spokesperson for the Bauchi Police Command, reveals that the female suspect, Maryam Ibrahim, is alleged to have received and sold the stolen tricycles.
Maryam is accused of having sold the seven stolen tricycles, often referred to as “Keke Napep,” within the Bauchi area.
Police investigations have also uncovered that she collaborated with four accomplices—Adamu Sale (30), Umar Ibrahim (31), Nasiru Usman (29), and Nasiru Musa Umar (27)—from various regions of Bauchi to carry out the theft.
The suspects were apprehended following a coordinated operation by the State Intelligence Department, which acted on reliable information about their activities.
During the raid, the police successfully recovered the seven stolen tricycles.
SP Wakil noted that receiving stolen property is a grave offence under Section 427 of the Criminal Code Act, carrying a potential prison sentence of up to 14 years.
The suspects are currently in police custody and will face court charges once the investigation is complete
