Bandits: We’re ready for dialogue with those willing to surrender — Sokoto Security Adviser

…Opens door to reintegration

The Sokoto State Government has declared its willingness to engage in dialogue with any armed group ready to renounce violence and reintegrate into society, as part of wider efforts to curb insecurity in the region.

This position was outlined in a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, retired Colonel Ahmed Usman, and made available to the press on Tuesday.

Colonel Usman noted that while the state remains firmly committed to maintaining law and order, it acknowledges that military action alone cannot resolve every conflict.

“Most conflicts throughout history have not been settled by force alone. This is why the state government is keeping its doors open to any bandit willing to disarm and rejoin society through peaceful means,” the statement read.

He described reconciliation and constructive engagement as essential to addressing the root causes of insecurity and achieving sustainable peace in Sokoto and surrounding areas.

The government also expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the heads of security agencies for their efforts in improving the security landscape across the region.

“We recognise and commend their dedication. May Allah have mercy on those who have died in the line of duty and grant their families the fortitude to bear their loss,” the statement added.

Tributes were also paid to members of the military, police, and other frontline security personnel for their sacrifices in protecting lives and property in areas affected by banditry within Sokoto State.

The announcement comes amid ongoing incidents of violence, kidnappings, and attacks across Sokoto and neighbouring states in Nigeria’s North-West.
