Aviation Minister backs Governor Okpebholo’s aspiration to launch Edo Air

The Federal Government has thrown its weight behind the proposal by the Edo State Government to establish Edo Air, a strategic aviation initiative designed to open up the state’s economy and restore Benin City’s status as a regional flight hub.

The assurance was given on Thursday in Abuja during a courtesy visit by the Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN.

During the meeting, Governor Okpebholo unveiled the Edo Air initiative, describing it as a deliberate step to strengthen the state’s aviation ecosystem.

He explained that the project is aimed at boosting economic activities, enhancing tourism, and significantly improving connectivity within the state and beyond.

According to the Governor, the initiative aligns with his administration’s broader vision of driving growth, attracting foreign investment, and positioning Edo as a competitive destination for both business and leisure.

Responding to the proposal, the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, expressed strong enthusiasm for the project.

He recalled Benin City’s historical significance in the Nigerian aviation sector, particularly referencing the era of the defunct Okada Air, which made the city a major operational hub.

Keyamo welcomed the Governor’s efforts to revive the sector and assured him of the Federal Government’s full support towards the actualisation of Edo Air.

He noted that such state-led interventions are critical for expanding the national aviation network and offering more travel options to Nigerians.

Governor Okpebholo described the engagement as a reinforcement of the strong collaboration between his administration and the Federal Government, adding that the partnership is vital for advancing infrastructure development and driving economic transformation in Edo State.
