ASUU declares two-week nationwide warning strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a two-week nationwide warning strike to begin on Monday, October 13, 2025.

The union’s National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, made the announcement on Sunday during a press briefing held at the ASUU National Secretariat, University of Abuja.

Prof. Piwuna explained that the decision followed what he described as the Federal Government’s persistent failure to address the union’s long-standing demands.

He said the warning strike became inevitable after several meetings and appeals to the government yielded no concrete results.

According to him, the strike directive has been communicated to all ASUU branches across the country, who are expected to fully comply beginning Monday.

Although the union did not immediately disclose details of the government’s unmet demands, they are believed to include issues bordering on salary arrears, the renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FG agreement, revitalization funding for public universities, and the implementation of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS).

The ASUU president said the action was a warning to the government to act swiftly and prevent a full-blown nationwide strike that could disrupt academic activities in all public universities.

He stressed that the union remains committed to defending the integrity and sustainability of university education in Nigeria, urging the Federal Government to “do the needful” to restore industrial harmony in the tertiary education sector.
