APC adopts indirect primary to pick candidate for Anambra governorship election

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has opted for an indirect primary to select its governorship candidate for the November 8, 2025, Anambra governorship election.

The decision was confirmed by Mr Ajibola Basiru, APC’s National Secretary, during a media briefing following the NWC meeting on Thursday in Abuja.

“Our meeting considered the processes involved in the upcoming Anambra governorship election scheduled for November 8, 2025.

It was formally decided that the mode of selecting our candidate will be through indirect primary,” Basiru stated.

He explained that the decision was made to ensure inclusivity among party stakeholders, in line with recommendations from the State Working Committee.

To further discuss the process, a stakeholders’ meeting involving the State Working Committee, State Caucus, and governorship aspirants will be convened at the party’s national headquarters at a later date.

Basiru assured that the APC leadership remains committed to providing a level playing field for all aspirants in the election.

The NWC also discussed plans to engage government appointees on their achievements under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

This initiative, scheduled to begin after the Ramadan fast, aims to facilitate interaction between the party and government officials, assessing both progress and challenges faced by various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

The NWC further reviewed the ongoing e-registration of party members. Basiru disclosed that the consultants managing the project have already been mobilised, and all necessary equipment and software have been acquired to ensure a smooth and efficient process.

“Our goal is that before the next election, we will have a credible membership register, which will also serve as a valuable tool for assessing the party’s demographics and internal structure,” he added.

According to reports, the APC raised N350 million from the sale of Expression of Interest and Nomination forms to seven governorship aspirants in Anambra State.

The nomination form was sold for N40 million, while the expression of interest form cost N10 million.

The aspirants who purchased the forms include: Chukuma Umeoji; Prof. Obiora Okonkwo; Nicholas Ukachukwu; Sir Paul Chukwuma; Onunkwo Johnbosco Obinna; Valentine Ozigbo; Edozie Madu.

These aspirants will compete for the party’s ticket in the APC primary election scheduled for April 5, 2025.
