Amupitan vows to partner national assembly for credible electoral reforms

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, has pledged to work closely with the National Assembly to deliver a credible, fair, and transparent electoral process for Nigeria.
Prof. Amupitan made the pledge while receiving a plaque of honour from the Federal University of Lokoja for his “dedication, hard work, and inspiration to many” during the 56th Annual National Conference of the Nigerian Association of Law Teachers (NALT).
He assured that INEC would play an active role in the ongoing amendment of the Electoral Act, noting that the Commission is committed to reforms that will strengthen democracy and restore public trust in elections.
“I will actively participate in the National Assembly process to ensure we have a learning and credible electoral system and laws that every Nigerian can be proud of,” Amupitan said, according to a statement shared on INEC’s social media platforms.
The INEC boss stressed that a major objective of the reform is to reduce post-election litigations, urging stakeholders to build a system where electoral disputes are minimal.
“Let us not see electoral petitions in court,” he said, advocating for a process that inspires confidence among Nigerians.
Reflecting on the importance of legal structures, Prof. Amupitan stated that “Law is not merely a set of rules but a foundation upon which societies build their progress,” emphasising that a sound electoral framework is essential to democratic growth.
He also called on the academic community to support efforts aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions and upholding electoral integrity.
The honour from the Federal University of Lokoja, he added, was a motivation to continue his service toward ensuring transparent and accountable governance through credible elections.
