Zamfara Assembly passes State Police bill

6 Oct 2026

The Zamfara House of Assembly has passed a resolution supporting the proposed alteration for the establishment of state police in Nigeria.

The Speaker of the house, Malam Bilyaminu Morki, made this known on Monday in Gusau while addressing newsmen.

‎Newsmen report that the National Assembly on  Sept. 16, transmitted the Constitution Alteration Bill seeking establishment of State Police Services to the 36 State Houses of Assembly for consideration and approval.

The State Bill was passed at both chambers of the Nigerian parliament and transmitted to the State Assemblies for consideration within 30 days

The bill must secure the approval of at least two-thirds of the 36 State Houses of Assembly before the process can be concluded.

‎Moriki noted that the National Assembly recognised the constitutional responsibility and independence of the State Houses of Assembly in considering the proposed amendments.

‎Moriki said the Zamfara assembly passed the bill to complement ongoing efforts by the federal and state governments in addressing the security challenges in the country.

The establishment of state police, he said, will provide additional support to the Nigerian security agencies in addressing the security challenges.

“Our resolution is inline with the efforts of the federal government and particularly Gov. Dauda Lawal towards addressing security challenges in the Zamfara and Nigeria as a whole,” he explained.

Reacting to the recent defection of the eight lawmakers from the All Progressives Congress (APC), the speaker said:’it will not in any way affect the activities of the house.

“Six out of the affected lawmakers were among the eight lawmakers suspended by the assembly since Feb. 26, 2024, over alleged gross misconduct, conspiracy, mischief, contempt of the House and violation of the Assembly’s Standing Orders.

“One of them is not a member of the house currently because his seat has already been declared vacant by the house.

“I want to use this medium to call in the general public to differentiate  between the lawmakers’ political decisions and the disciplinary actions taken against them.

“The seventh assembly remains committed to the rule of law, legislative integrity and the protection of public institutions.

“The house remains stable, functional and fully engaged in legislative activities,” he added.

Newsmen also report that the Oyo State House of Assembly on Sept. 30, passed the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, seeking to provide a constitutional framework for the establishment and operation of State Police Services across the country.
