The National Youth Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Dayo Israel, has urged the party stakeholders to embrace deep internal reflection and reform rather than relying on routine post-election excuses ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In an article analysing the party’s performance in the Osun State governorship election, Israel highlighted the necessity for democratic sportsmanship while urging the APC leadership to confront systemic weaknesses in mobilization, youth inclusion, and internal cohesion.
The APC Youth Leader identified three central figures who defined the political dynamics of the election: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Ademola Adeleke, and music superstar David Adeleke, widely known as Davido.
He commended President Tinubu for exercising constitutional restraint, noting that the presidency chose not to deploy federal power or state security apparatus to sway the outcome.
According to him, this decision mirrors earlier off-cycle elections in states like Anambra and Bayelsa, demonstrating a commitment to institutional integrity and democratic norms even when the immediate result does not favor the ruling party.
The Youth Leader however argued that political analysts consistently misread Governor Adeleke’s public persona.
He observed that Adeleke’s accessibility, public worship, and cultural performances served as effective tools of grassroots communication, building emotional proximity with ordinary citizens that technocratic and elite-driven campaigns failed to disrupt.
He pointed out that while the opposition effectively tapped into the cultural and digital influence of prominent youth icons, the APC’s outreach leaned heavily on conventional political figures such as governors and senators who often struggle to establish genuine cultural resonance with the younger generation.
Reflecting on organizational lapses within the party, Israel expressed concern over the marginalization of official party organs, specifically noting that the constitutionally recognized National Youth Wing was sidelined in favor of ad hoc structures.
He further noted that the National Working Committee did not convene to formally evaluate or recalibrate campaign strategy after the inauguration of the campaign council, a gap he characterized as a significant strategic liability.
To prevent similar setbacks in the 2027 general elections, he urged the APC to move away from late-stage campaign preparations and ceremonial rallies dominated by visiting dignitaries.
Instead, the Youth Leader recommended early organizing, genuine internal reconciliation to heal party divisions, elevated roles for local community and labor leaders, and the deliberate empowerment of young communicators, creatives, and organizers.
He also suggested adopting pragmatic political dialogue, noting that sustainable electoral success relies on strategic coalition-building and grassroots connection.
